JoSAA is the acronym for Joint Seat Allocation Authority. It is a memorandum of agreement that was signed to standardize and control the admission procedure in 80 top-tier colleges of India. It was signed between the Joint Admission Board, Joint Entrance Admission, Central Seat Allocation Board, and other partly or fully central or State-funded technical institutes.
What is JoSAA?
The Ministry of Human Resource Development took the responsibility to organized the meeting for the signing of this memorandum. The first ever meeting of this authority was held on the campus of IIT Bombay on 2nd of May, 2015. In this meeting, the business rules and norms for Joint Seat Allocation were finalized. Around 80 IITs, NITs, and other technical institutes will make a total of 32000 seats available to students on a single platform to choose from.
What did JoSAA decide?
In the meeting, the Joint Allocation Authority decided that for all the academic courses, seat allocation of the participating institutes will be done by JoSAA from the academic year 2015. It was decided that all the institutes will be following the same platform for admissions which will take place through online platform only. The host site for Joint Seat Allocation will be designed by National Informatic Center.
What is the Motive Behind JoSAA?
Earlier, every institute used to have their admission procedure. This used to create a burden not only on the institutes but the students as well. In order reduce this burden, JoSAA introduced this new system. Moreover, this new system adopted by JoSAA will also reduce the number of vacant seats in top-notch institutes of the country. Earlier, students used to block the seats in some of the institutes and try for an institute which had the much higher ranking. But, now because of Joint Seat Allocation system, blocking of seats by students will no longer be possible. Thus, while the process of JoSAA seat allocation will become more efficient, effective as well as a lot faster.
